Examples of using footnotes correctly

Essay (see bottom of page for footnotes)

This is an example of how to use footnotes.[1]  D.M. Thomas, a noted biographer of Solzhenitsyn, claims that Solzhenitsyn is not anti-Semitic.  These stereotypes developed when Solzhenitsyn was suggesting that Russia return to its traditions.  Although these traditions do include much anti-Semitism, Thomas claims that this was never the intent of Solzhenitsyn.[2]   On the other hand, in China one can find examples of governmental actions that appear far more brutal than anything Solzhenitsyn suggested.[3]
